The knowledge behind the ritual

What is matcha?

Not just a trendy drink. Matcha is a Japanese tradition rooted in mindfulness, crafted from an entire tea leaf, and designed to give you sustained, calm focus. Here is everything you need to understand it.

Section 1

What is matcha,
really?

Regular Green Tea

You steep the leaves in water, drink the water, and throw the leaves away. You absorb only a fraction of the nutrients — whatever dissolved into the water.

~10% of nutrients absorbed

Matcha

The entire tea leaf is stone-ground into a fine powder. When you drink matcha, you consume the whole leaf — every amino acid, antioxidant, and nutrient.

~100% of nutrients consumed

Matcha became central to Japanese culture through the tea ceremony — Chanoyu. Zen Buddhist monks used it to maintain calm alertness during long hours of meditation. Warriors drank it before battle for focus without anxiety. Over centuries, it became not just a drink, but a ritual of presence, intention, and discipline.

That philosophy is what every bowl of Suko Matcha carries.

Section 2

Shizuoka.
Where our matcha is born.

Shizuoka sits at the foot of Mount Fuji. The combination of volcanic soil, high altitude, and cool mountain air creates ideal conditions for growing tea with exceptional depth of flavour and nutritional density.

Shizuoka produces more than 40% of Japan's total tea. But the finest ceremonial-grade matcha from this region is reserved for those who know what to look for.

Mountain climate

Cool temperatures slow the leaf's growth, concentrating flavour and amino acids.

Volcanic soil

Rich in minerals that feed deep green colour and smooth, rounded taste.

Generations of craft

Families in Shizuoka have perfected tea cultivation for over 400 years.

We source directly from Shizuoka farms — no middlemen, no compromises. The matcha you receive is stone-ground within weeks of harvest.

Section 3

Why people replace
coffee with matcha.

Coffee and matcha both contain caffeine. But how that caffeine behaves in your body is completely different.

L-Theanine is an amino acid found almost exclusively in matcha. It crosses the blood-brain barrier and promotes alpha brain waves — the state of relaxed focus you feel during meditation. Combined with caffeine, it smooths out the stimulation and extends the effect. That's the feeling matcha drinkers describe as “calm energy.”

Section 5

The matcha ritual.
Six steps. Centuries of craft.

01

栽培

Harvest

Young spring leaves are hand-picked at the moment of peak flavour.

02

遮光

Shade Grow

Plants are covered for 3–4 weeks before harvest to boost chlorophyll and L-Theanine.

03

蒸す

Steam

Leaves are steamed immediately after picking to lock in colour, nutrients, and freshness.

04

石臼

Stone Grind

Granite mills grind the dried leaves slowly — 30g per hour — into a powder finer than flour.

05

点前

Whisk

Hot water and matcha are whisked in a bamboo chasen until smooth and frothy.

06

一服

Drink

A moment of intention. Calm focus arrives within the hour.
