Both come from Camellia sinensis. The difference: with matcha you consume the entire leaf — not a brewed extract. That changes everything about the nutrition, the taste, and the effect.

Why whole-leaf changes everything.

When you brew green tea, hot water extracts the water-soluble compounds — primarily some catechins and caffeine — and you discard the leaf. You're getting maybe 20–30% of what's in the leaf. The fat-soluble antioxidants, the chlorophyll, the fibre, the full amino acid profile — those stay in the discarded leaves.

Matcha is the entire leaf, stone-ground to a powder and suspended in water. You drink all of it. This is why the antioxidant concentration is roughly 10–15× that of brewed green tea per serving.
