FROM TEMPLES TO TEA HOUSES

A journey that began long before the latte.

Before matcha became a latte it belonged to a deeper Japanese tea tradition. The journey behind every bowl, from tea garden to tencha.

Before matcha became a latte, a smoothie ingredient, or a morning ritual shared around the world, it was part of a much deeper Japanese tea tradition.

At Suko, we believe that understanding matcha begins with understanding the journey behind every bowl.

Tea has been cultivated in Japan for centuries, and over generations, Japanese tea growers and producers have developed distinct ways of cultivating, processing, preparing, and enjoying tea. The result is not simply a powder in a tin—it is a product shaped by agriculture, craftsmanship, place, season, and tradition.

Matcha itself has a particularly distinctive journey.

The tea used for matcha is produced as tencha. Depending on the production method, tea plants are shaded before harvest, the leaves are harvested and processed, and the resulting tencha is ground into an exceptionally fine powder. Unlike an infusion where the leaves are steeped and removed, matcha is consumed as a powder suspended in water.

That difference changes the experience.

You see the colour. You feel the texture. You taste the character of the tea. And you experience the work that went into producing it.

From tea garden to tencha

The journey starts in the field.

Tea plants respond to their surroundings—the climate, rainfall, soil, terrain, cultivation practices, and season all influence the characteristics of the leaves.

For matcha, the story continues after cultivation.

Tencha production involves processing the harvested leaves in a way that prepares them for grinding. The finished tencha can then be carefully ground into the fine powder we know as matcha.

The final powder is the result of many stages of agricultural and manufacturing expertise.

That is why we believe matcha deserves more attention than simply asking: “Does it taste good in a latte?”

The better questions are:

  • Where was it grown?
  • When was it harvested?
  • How was it processed?
  • Who produced it?
  • How was it stored?
  • And what can the product record tell us about its journey?

The ritual matters too

Japanese tea culture has never been only about consuming a beverage.

The preparation of tea can create a moment of attention in an otherwise busy day.

A bowl. A whisk. Water at the right temperature. A few deliberate movements. And a few quiet minutes.

Modern matcha culture has naturally evolved. Today, people enjoy matcha traditionally, over ice, with milk, and in countless recipes.

We love that matcha has found a place in modern life.

But we also believe its modern popularity should not erase the tradition behind it.

At Suko, our aim is to bring Japanese matcha into contemporary routines while keeping the story of the tea visible.

More than a latte

A matcha latte may be where many people discover matcha.

But it doesn’t have to be where the story ends.

We want people to become curious about the tea itself—the farms, the regions, the harvests, the production methods, and the people behind every batch.

Because when you understand the journey, a cup of matcha becomes something more than a drink.

It becomes a connection between agriculture, craftsmanship, culture, and your everyday ritual.
