What have researchers actually observed about matcha, and what could those findings mean for your routine? Here is what was studied, what researchers found and what the evidence does not yet prove.

What researchers studied
A systematic review examined 11 randomized human studies involving caffeine, L-theanine and other tea compounds.
Researchers also conducted a small matcha-specific study in which 42 young adults consumed 2 g of matcha daily for two weeks before completing mentally demanding tasks under mild psychological stress.
What they observed
The systematic review found that caffeine consumed with L-theanine produced moderate improvements in alertness, attention switching and accuracy during certain tasks, particularly during the first two hours.
In the matcha-specific study, participants maintained aspects of attentional performance after mild stress. Researchers did not find meaningful differences across every cognitive test.
What it could mean for your day
Matcha may be a purposeful caffeinated drink for work, study and other moments that require attention.
What it does not prove
It does not guarantee greater productivity, eliminate tiredness or treat stress and anxiety.

What researchers studied
In one small randomized study, 12 women consumed 3 g of matcha daily for three weeks. Researchers then measured how their bodies used fuel during a 30-minute brisk walk.
A separate study combined daily matcha consumption with resistance-training programmes lasting eight or twelve weeks.
What they observed
During the walking study, fat oxidation was higher after matcha consumption. This means the participants used more fat as fuel during that activity. Individual responses varied considerably, and total energy expenditure did not increase.
The resistance-training research reported lower subjective fatigue early in training. In another part of the study, the matcha group had a larger change in muscle mass and lower salivary cortisol than the placebo group.
What it could mean for your routine
These findings explain why researchers are investigating matcha as part of an active lifestyle and around exercise.
What it does not prove
These small studies do not prove that matcha:
- Causes weight loss
- Burns body fat
- Builds muscle
- Replaces exercise
- Improves athletic performance for everyone

Beyond caffeine
What researchers know
Matcha contains tea catechins, including EGCG. These naturally occurring plant compounds are widely studied for antioxidant activity.
Matcha also naturally contains caffeine, L-theanine, chlorophyll and other compounds found in powdered green-tea leaves.
Why researchers are interested
Catechins can interact with oxidation at a chemical level. This is why EGCG and other green-tea catechins continue to be studied.
What it could mean for your day
Your matcha contains more than caffeine. It provides a broader collection of naturally occurring compounds from finely powdered green-tea leaves.
What it does not prove
Antioxidant activity does not automatically mean that drinking matcha will prevent disease, protect a particular organ or produce a guaranteed health improvement.

Inside the gut
What researchers studied
In a small randomized study, 33 people consumed either matcha or a placebo drink for two weeks. Researchers analysed their gut-microbiome composition before and after the study.
What they observed
The overall composition of gut bacteria changed in the matcha group but not in the placebo group.
Researchers reported changes across 30 bacterial groups in the matcha participants, compared with three in the placebo group.
What researchers want to understand next
Scientists are investigating whether matcha’s catechins, insoluble fibre and other whole-leaf compounds interact meaningfully with the gut microbiome.
The important next question is whether these microbial changes translate into consistent digestive, metabolic or broader health outcomes.
What it could mean for your routine
Matcha introduces finely powdered tea-leaf compounds into your diet, and researchers are beginning to examine how those compounds interact with the gut.
What it does not prove
The study observed changes in gut bacteria. It did not prove:
- Better digestion

How much matcha?
Begin with one serving a day and see how your body responds. For most healthy adults, Suko suggests one to two servings as a simple daily routine.
If considering another serving, account for caffeine from every source and avoid consuming it close to bedtime if caffeine affects your sleep.
